Powerful winds hitting speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have left nearly 90,000 households lacking electricity and compelled authorities to halt over 100 air travel services, according to domestic outlets.

The winds are impacting the entire South Island and southern parts of the North Island, per the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have announced rare severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in core zones such as these major districts.

Locals have been encouraged to avoid going outside, refrain from journeys, and prepare for further electricity and network failures.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Response

The power cut seems to be impacting homes mainly in the southern region, although agencies report that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Domestic outlets have stated that in some places roofs have been ripped off houses, whereas power lines and trees have been toppled by the gales.

In Wellington, a man was killed after being struck by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was blown onto oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a incident that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services to and from the urban area have been halted because of the winds, while various routes and public facilities are also closed.

Simultaneously authorities in Canterbury have declared a state of emergency, to assist emergency management operations.
