Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few do not, including prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a law mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical binders of materials that contained no previously unseen information.
