Around fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.

Law enforcement report they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.

The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they added.

Officers then found multiple other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state early analysis suggest the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no indication as to where it came from; officials are currently not aware of any harm in connection with the event," they stated.

Municipal representatives said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.

A high-ranking official commented the attack rendered him stunned and required to be addressed quickly.

"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a assailant targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
