Boston's Leader Michelle Wu Addresses President Trump's Threat to Move FIFA World Cup Games from Boston

Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, indicated that the city was ready for a dispute with President Donald Trump regarding his assertion that he could order FIFA to relocate World Cup tournament games from the stadium in Foxborough, located 22 miles southwest of Boston.

Mayor Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to address comments from the Trump administration, which had described her as "far-left." Trump had threatened that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "improve its situation."

A great deal of it is secured by contract so that no single person, even the president, can reverse it.

Wu continued, "We live in a time where for attention, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are issued at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and submit or follow along to a hateful agenda."

She also remarked, "We are going to continue being who we are, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting what Boston stands for." She concluded by emphasizing her commitment for the Boston, saying, "Ten toes down for Boston."

Trump's Comments and FIFA Role

Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was photographed with Trump at the international summit in Egypt. The FIFA president has also been to the White House and presented World Cup and Club World Cup trophies to the president as gifts.

Earlier, Trump was asked about recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police car being burned. He responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Infantino – the president of the organization, who's phenomenal."

He added, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would do that. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it very easily." Trump also directly criticized Wu, saying, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Past Warnings and 2026 World Cup Details

Trump has previously suggested that he would take the same conversation with Infantino about relocating matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are part of the 16 locations across the continent.

The United States is joint hosts the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be played from 11 June to 19 July in the coming year.
